Hiring help adds focus as tutoring service grows
Tiana Velez, ARIZONA DAILY STAR
SMALL BUSINESS MAKEOVER A local business counselor offers advice. Finding that perfect work-life balance isn't always first
on the list of priorities for a solo entrepreneur. Debbie Rodriguez, who owns a tutoring business, knew the needed balance existed
but did not have the time to achieve it. She wanted her business to grow, and sometimes logged 70 or more hours a week working
on it. She wanted to learn how to build it the right way without risking burnout.
Tutoring Solutions' boss no longer bogged down

Even academic tutors can use a little hand to learn new skills, now and then.
Last July, Tutoring Solutions owner Debbie Rodriguez-Baggesen was trying to get some new programming off the ground in time for
summer school.
Started in 2003, the service provided one-on-one tutoring to school-age children and young teens, but Rodriguez-Baggesen had
some ideas on how to expand.
The problem was while she had a lot of ideas, she had no time to put them into action.
She admitted her life lacked balance.
"I worked all the time. There were no vacation, no set schedules or hours," she said last year. "I'd think, 'Am I working on the things
that I need to be working on?' "

Women's Foundation 2006 luncheon
As part of the luncheon program, entrepreneur Debbie Rodriguez-Baggesen spoke about the help she received from the Microbusiness Advancement Center, a 2005 grant partner, in successfully launching her business, Tutoring Solutions. ìUsually I like to do things on my own but through MAC, I was reminded of the importance of the team approach, to be open and flexible. Iím proud to be able to say that it worked and today I own and operate Tutoring Solutions with a staff of 30 wonderful individuals, she said.
